Wikipedia
gauge (American Wire Gauge - AWG) is a thickness measuring system in use in the U.S. since the mid-nineteenth century, which is applicable to metals other than steel. There are other standards (such as the British Imperial Wire Gauge or Standard Gauge British) but what you will use to measure the thickness of the wire (or the plate or sheet) metal sites in the U.S. is the AWG.
The golden rule to learn is that the higher the gauge number the thinner the wire, and vice versa. So the 16 gauge wire is thicker than 26 gauge wire. There are plenty of tables
gauge conversion to inches and millimeters, I recommend that you print and to keep around a lot if you use the tutorial or get the edge on American Etsy or U.S. sites. There few: ~ table with useful tips on what to use to make different thickness components.
