Il decapaggio ( pickling ) è il processo chimico di pulizia delle superfici metalliche dagli ossidi che si sono formati in seguito alla ricottura o semplicemente all'esposizione all'aria, oppure dai residui delle saldature. I metalli che contengono rame (le varie sue leghe e anche l'argento) si ossidano facilmente, in particolare se riscaldati, quindi il processo di ricottura ne ricopre la superficie. Questa patina superficiale potrebbe essere ciò che cerchiamo (la cosiddetta heat patina ), ma se non lo è, soprattutto se un pezzo viene sottoposto per varie volte alla ricottura durante la lavorazione, allora serve un bella pulizia profonda.
